Soaked

So we've had a pretty dry summer and I think I've mowed the yard about 5 times.  I was commenting how we needed some rain to perk things up.  Well, I guess I need to be more specific.  It's been raining since Sunday night, and quite the deluge today!  Our backyard is a lake and the pool is overflowing.

You see some crazy stuff when it's raining; here's what I saw on the way home:

     - cars without lights on (really people, it's dark and raining cats and dogs and your invisible!)
     - cars driving 5 mph
     - cars driving 75 mph
     - a man with his arm out the window like it was a nice sunny day
     - a convertible with a ripped top but with a nice throw rug to cover it up (a nice flowery one!)

Weekend of Fun

Fun-filled weekend in the Kenney household.  We went to Toy Story 3 on Ice friday night.  It wasn't too bad, although snacks cost about a million dollars!

Nicholas was a tired puppy by the time it was over (9:30).  He climbed up on my lap for the last 15 minutes or so of the show.

I did a small garage sale on Sat morning.  Not a very successful one in relation to others that we've had.  Oh well, got rid of some stuff and the rest is ready to go to Goodwill this week.  Angie spent most of the day running last minute errands for the Cooking for Life/American Cancer Society benefit at the Virginia Living Museum.  She went there in the early afternoon to start getting things set up.  I went over about 4 to help out as well.  Everything came together and was ready by the time the VIPs started showing up a little after 6pm.  We enjoyed some wine, good food, friends, a band, and the silent auction.  We won a photography session with a local photographer and a $50 gift card from a steak house in town.

Today has been football and laundry. Back to work tomorrow...

One wife, no subsitutes, and praise!

"The secret of my successful marriage is the same secret that I have in business:  I stick to the same model." (Henry Ford, on his 50th wedding anniversary)

Have you thought about this secret?  In wedding vows we pledge devotion until death parts us. For life!  There is no competition. Angie has no competition. I am not shopping for a new model and I don't want to trade in the old model. I will not be shopping in the future. One is all I need.

When God made man, He said it is good. But then He said, "It is not good that he is alone. I am going to make a helper suitable for him." (Genesis 2: 18) And the Bible says God took one of Adam's ribs, and He formed a woman, Eve, and brought her to the man (Genesis 2: 22).  Did you catch that?  God did not take four or five ribs and say, "Okay, Adam, here is Eve, and here is Ruth, and here is Samantha, and here is Rachel." No, it was just one. And to have a healthy marriage relationship, that is it.

How about the substitutes or imitations we find?  Don't look for fulfillment in some other relationship or in some other thing. Don't allow any substitute, no matter what it might be, to take the place of intimacy with your spouse.  My wife was my best friend when we got married and she's still my best friend today.

How about when we talk to our friends about our spouse?  Do we build up our spouse or do we speak flippantly or negatively about them?  If we do, we erode our respect for them. Some people are just far too casual in the way they speak of their spouse...have you ever been uncomfortable in a situation listening to someone bash their spouse?  What if you were the one they were speaking about?  Words are long-lasting and seldom forgotten.  Few things can affect a relationship like words. Words are containers. They can contain love; they can contain hate; they can contain joy; they can contain bitterness.

Our tongue is like a rudder on a ship (James 3: 5). It sets the direction of your marriage according to words it speaks. Some people are on the brink of divorce because they talk divorce. Just listen to the words they say. Are they negative or positive? Critical or encouraging?  Are you building up your spouse? Build them up with your words. Be lavish with your praise. You'll be amazed where those words will take your relationship.

"He who loves his wife loves himself" (Ephesians 5:28)

I love you Angie...you're the best!

Volleyball

Volleyball season started for Emma with her first game last night.  They won!  She was pretty excited.  Walking around saying "we're going to win every game and win the tournament".  It's good to hear her get excited about a physical activity!

Wasp Sting

So Angie got stung by a wasp on Wednesday and she still has nice red patch on her arm!  It was big (and square!) and red for several days, but seems to be getting better.  She took a non-drowsy sudafed thing today and she was out!  Sudafed always puts her right to sleep.

We went and saw Bill Engvall Friday night at the Ferguson center.  We had a good time.  The lady sitting next to Angie never cracked a smile or a laugh and moaned to her husband about where they were sitting!  So sad...how can you go and not have a good time?

Katelyn was in the Denbigh Day parade on Sat morning and then had a show at her gym that afternoon.  Nicholas and I went to the commissary and got some much needed grocery shopping done.  The girls then spent the night over with the neighbor girls.  I managed to get the logs I had in the back yard cut up in to fireplace size logs.  Thanks Dad for letting me borrow the chainsaw!

My Favorite Summer Day, by Emma

One of her school assignments last week:
-----
My favorite day this summer was the 6th. We went to Colonial Williamsburg.  It was amazing!  i had so much fun.  We explored a colonial farm.  It had chickens, horses, oxen, and pigs.  Nicholas got to feed a pig corn.  We saw the Goveners Palace, and went into its celar.  We also went inside the courthouse.  We got our picture taken in it.  I was sad when we had to leave.  This was my favorite summer day.

My Summer Vacation, by Katelyn

From Katelyn's school folder this week; I typed it exactly how it was written:

This summer I got a new pool.  We also went to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown and Yorktown.  I had fun, but I got a little bored.  We went to are grandparent's house.  They have four dogs.  They got a new dog named Heidi.  She is very spongy.  We call her Sponge Dog Square Pants.  Also are Gramy C came and are Gramps.  I had fun this summer.

Alan Jackson-Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning

Sep 11th - 9 years ago

Let us never forget the day that changed recent American history.  Let us never forget the lives lost that day, the families left behind, and the subsequent military lives lost in Iraq/Afghanistan since.

9-11 was my 1st day of work in D.C.  We had just arrived from Vegas and staying in Temporary Lodging on Bolling AFB in D.C.  Emma was almost 2 and Angie was pregnant with Katelyn.  I left for work that day and told Ang I'd be inprocessing at the Pentagon.  Some changes of plans occurred and I actually ended up going to the Navy Yard 1st.  I was getting ready to leave there for the Pentagon when my coworker and I saw the news with the 1st plane hitting the 1st Trade Center twin tower.  We started to leave once again when the 2nd tower was struck.  At that time we decided to stay in place as the realization that this was no accident began to sink in.  Shortly there after the Pentagon was struck as well.  Emotions were running high; people were in shock, anger, worry, and confusion.  Phone lines were jammed as people began calling.  As military Airmen, the people in my office were all thinking about our coworkers and loved ones (one of my Airmen's wife worked there) at the Pentagon.

It was several hours before I was able to finally get a minute on a phone to call Angie to let her know I was okay and NOT at the Pentagon.  It was several more hours before I made it home.  The base was in total lock down.  The security police in full up battle rattle, armored personnel carriers at the gates, surface-to-air missile systems deployed around the area.  It was a very surreal situation.

The Pentagon a day later (we began 24hour operations soon after the attacks) had a smokey smell with soot on the floors and walls, and several corridors blocked off.  My office area was in the AF wing and was not struck and everyone was ok.  The strike still hit close to me however, as a Navy officer (Lt. Cmdr Otis Tolbert) I worked with in Tampa was killed in his office in the Pentagon on that fateful day. Rest in peace Sir.

Let us never forget.

Labor Day weekend

The last official weekend of summer is over.  :(   Ang & the kids all start school tomorrow...it should be interesting in the morning for Angie getting everybody up.  We had a busy weekend.  Met some old friends (who were visiting Williamsburg) for dinner Friday and then we went over to another friends house for a nice evening of games and wine.  Saturday was a busy day of watching Iowa WIN, and then we went over to some friends for dinner and more games!  Sunday was nice and we enjoyed a whole row with friends at church, then we had a nice lunch at Chili's.  Today we went to Colonial Williamsburg for several hours.  Then a mad rush tonight getting things in order for tomorrow.

Nicholas the Nut

Nicholas got to take a summer gymnastic/tumbling class...he seemed to be pretty proud of himself!

Gramps!

We had a nice extended weekend with Doug (Gramps).  He came in Thu and left Tues.  We managed to go to Yorktown to the farmers market, the Victory Center, and the Battlefield.  We also went to Jamestown for a day.  Plus we spent a day getting Angie's classroom painted and ready for school next week.  The kids had a great time with their Gramps and we all ate WAY too much. I also had him help me put a couple pieces of my siding back up on the house.  Just in time for the incoming hurricane!

Camping Trip

Nick & I got a camping trip in last weekend.  We went to Chickahominy Riverfront park over by Williamsburg.  The weather was nice and co...
